The University Hospital Heidelberg is one of the major healthcare centers in Germany. Our objective is the development of innovative diagnostics and therapies as well as their quick implementation for the patient. With about 10,700 employees in more than 50 specialized clinical departments with almost 2,000 beds, about 80,000 patients in part-time and full-time inpatient treatment as well as 1,000,000 patients in ambulant treatment are medicated each year.

PhD student position – Molecular Cardiology Lab (m/f/d)

wanted for 01.12.2022 at the Department of Internal Medicine III, Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology for the Molecular Cardiology Lab.

  • Job-ID: V000010297
  • Field of application: Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology
  • Location: Heidelberg
  • Job Category: Science and teaching
  • Working hours: Part time (65 %)
  • Limitation: Temporary (36 months, extension is sought)
  • Contract: TV-L

Your Tasks

Our Molecular Cardiology lab is inviting applications for a postdoc and a PhD position to investigate the role of novel molecules and pathways in the pathogenesis of cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Our broader translational aim is to explore these molecules as potential targets for therapy which will then be tested in vivo, including utilization of cardiac gene transfer (AAV-based) and small molecule screens. As part of the newly formed CRC 1550 – Molecular Circuits of Heart Disease, we have established collaborations with multiple established PIs within the Heidelberg and Mannheim experimental and clinical cardiovascular communities. As such, successful candidates will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment and the opportunity to thrive in a highly collaborative scientific environment.

In our molecular cardiology lab within a modern research building (“Analysezentrum III”, University Hospital Heidelberg) we offer a dynamic and highly interactive and cross-disciplinary research environment. All OMICs experiments will be analyzed in cooperation with excellent groups on campus (e.g. Prof. Saez-Rodriguez) which offers additional learning opportunities. PhD students will join the Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School (HBIGS) and will also take part in a specialized cardiovascular curriculum. As our group is part of the DZHK (“Deutsches Zentrum für Herz-Kreislaufforschung”) you'll have access to additional education and mentoring programs as well as specific young investigator funding opportunities.

Your Profile

  • Master's / Doctoral degree in a related field such as biology / biochemistry / life sciences
  • Previous experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, -OMICS, and/or genetically modified animal models of cardiac disease will be viewed favorably
  • Basic knowledge on bioinformatics viewed as a plus
  • Ability and desire to work effectively in a team
  • Self-motivated and creative thinker
