Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is our goal to make significant contributions to mastering the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility, and information. For this, more than 9.000 employees of KIT cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in research, academic education, and innovation.

The Laboratory for Applications of Synchrotron Radiation (LAS) offers as soon as possible and limited to 3 years a

PhD Position (f/m/d)

Growth, structure and lattice dynamics of core-shell nanowires

The activities of our group are focused on epitaxial growth and characterization of functional nanostructures and investigation of the lattice dynamics and associated phenomena (electron-phonon, spin-phonon interactions) with advanced x-ray scattering and spectroscopic methods using synchrotron radiation (more details can be found here: https://www.nanodynamics-group.com/publications.html). In the frame of a BMBF-funded project, the interplay between lattice dynamics, crystal structure, epitaxial strain, core diameter and shell thickness of carefully selected core-shell nanowire heterostructures will be systematically investigated. Owning to their high aspect ratio and spatial confinement, core-shell nanowires attracted significant interest due to the possibility for engineering their physical properties by tuning the core diameter, shell thickness and epitaxial strain at the core-shell interface. The knowledge on phononic and thermal properties of these systems might have a revolutionary impact on important areas such as thermal management of micro- and nanoelectronics and thermoelectrics.

The epitaxial growth and structure characterization of the core-shell nanowires will be performed in the UHV-Analysis laboratory at the KIT-Light Source employing surface-sensitive methods available in the lab and at the synchrotron beamlines. The lattice dynamics will be investigated at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble and at the light source PETRA III in Hamburg employing state-of-the-art x-ray scattering and spectroscopy methods.

Personal qualification:

  • University degree (Master/Diplom) in physics.
  • Strong interest in experimental solid state physics, surface science / nanotechnology and crystallography is required. Experience with ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) instrumentation and/or synchrotron radiation scattering / spectroscopy methods is an advantage. Experience with data evaluation / programing packages (Python, Mathlab, C++) is an asset.
  • A very good command of English is a prerequisite.
  • High motivation to become a part of an international vibrant scientific community.

We offer you an attractive and modern workplace with access to the excellent equipment of the KIT, a varied work, a wide range of training opportunities, flexible working time models, an allowance for the job ticket BW and a casino/cafeteria.
